Assam sees slip in road accident fatalities despite rise in accidents

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that while the state has witnessed an increase in road accidents compared to last year, the number of fatalities has decreased due to prompt medical intervention.
Comparing road accident data from 2023 and 2024, CM Sarma highlighted the rise in accidents but emphasised the positive impact of timely medical assistance in reducing deaths.
In January 2023, Assam recorded 654 accidents, whereas this number rose to 819 in January 2024. Similarly, February saw an increase from 582 accidents in 2023 to 822 in 2024, marking a surge of over 41%.
The Chief Minister provided a detailed comparison for the first six months of 2023 and 2024, noting that every month in 2024 saw more accidents than the same period the previous year. Notably, June 2024 recorded 1,234 accidents, more than double the 555 cases reported in June 2023. The smallest increase was observed in May, with 831 accidents in 2024 compared to 686 in 2023.
From January to June 2024, the state recorded 5,460 accidents, a 45% increase from the 3,746 accidents during the same period in 2023. Despite this rise, fatalities decreased from 1,670 in 2023 to 1,248 in the first half of 2024, which CM Sarma attributes to faster medical response.
However, injuries from road accidents have seen a significant increase of over 150%, with 7,360 injuries reported in the first half of 2024, compared to 2,907 in the same period in 2023.
Sharing the data on social media platform X, CM Sarma remarked, "Road accidents have gone up by 45% resulting in more injuries, but fatalities have come down by 25% due to timely medical assistance and treatment."
