Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis reportedly announced that 12,000 houses would be constructed for dabbawalas and members of the 'charmakar' (cobbler) community over the next three years under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY). He is said to have signed a memorandum of understanding with developers for this housing project.
According to a release from Fadnavis's office, the project will be managed by the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) and will be executed under the PMAY scheme. It was mentioned that Priyanka Homes Realty would provide a 30-acre plot for the development, while Naman Builders will carry out the project on a no-profit-no-loss basis.
The release also noted that the 500 sq ft homes will be priced at Rs 25 lakh. Fadnavis expressed that the project would realise the dream of dabbawalas to own their own homes.
