Surat facilitated the execution and management of different projects under the Smart Cities Mission (SCM) to catapult itself to the top rank among the top 20 smart cities in the country. Previously, Surat was positioned fourth in the ranking announced by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
Currently, 65 projects costing Rs 1,573 were completed. Whereas 15 projects worth Rs 1,350 are under execution. The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) and Surat Smart City Development received a grant for these projects -- 50% from the Centre and 25% from the state. The remaining 25% was used from its funds.
An official of SMC told the media that Ahemdabad was in the sixth position among the 100 cities classified for the ranking. The rankings are reviewed after observing overall performances, including management, execution, financial aspects, regularly.
Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi launched the SCM on 25 June 2015.
Surat city was among 100 cities to develop as a smart city in India due to several accomplishments and initiatives.
At present, Surat SMC has been selected for the city award because of its active momentum and implementation of each project.
