Interior designing start-up in Chennai is using AR to visualise décor

We strive to pick colours, furniture, and décor when we decide to design or makeover our rooms, offices, or houses. However, without visualisation, making a decision is difficult.

What if we could virtually view how a space might appear with a certain style of decoration? Pixel and Mortar, based in Chennai, is tackling this issue by employing an augmented reality platform to let customers visualise home decors.

Pixel and Mortar, founded in 2020 by Siddharth Chandrashekar, is building a platform that allows users to combine digital and physical, allowing for a world in which a trained interior designer creates mood boards to understand user preferences and then suggests furniture, rugs, wallpapers, lamps, furnishings, and more.

Users will be able to view precisely how their room's décor will look in 3D, as well as change and rearrange items as needed, thanks to the platform.

Siddharth tells YourStory that the end-to-end AR platform would be available in early 2022. More than 30 big online furniture and home décor retailers have already signed up to use this platform to sell their products.

Mitrra Media, a design studio that delivers aesthetic, inventive, and product-based design services for small-medium enterprises, was founded by him in 1997. In 2013, he founded Pencil and Monk, an interior design business that specialises in customising personal spaces ranging from low-cost residences to high-end hospitality projects.

The need for interior design surged even more during the COVID-19 lockdowns, since individuals were pent up at home all day. However, while they were interested in having improvements done, they were concerned about the exorbitant expenditures. As a result, a new approach was developed: planning by room rather than by house.
