BMC Rejects Faulty Concrete, Enforces Strict Quality Checks

During a recent inspection of Mumbai's road concretisation work, senior civic officials detected that the concrete mix exceeded the permissible slump value, making it too fluid and potentially compromising its strength and durability. After consulting IIT Bombay experts, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) rejected the faulty batch and sent the delivery truck back. Contractors and the Quality Control Agency (QCA) were issued notices to explain the issue and outline corrective measures.

To enhance quality control, the BMC has made the Slump Test mandatory at both Ready-Mix Concrete (RMC) plants and work sites. Officials also inspected road works in Yashwant Nagar-Chembur following public complaints.

BMC Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal reviewed the pre-cast concrete road at Godrej Complex, Vikhroli, and engaged IIT experts to assess its feasibility for municipal road projects. The inspection was attended by IIT professors P. Vedgiri and Solomon Dibbarty, Deputy Commissioner (Infrastructure) Shashank Bhore, and QCA representatives.
