Ramagundam NTPC develops geopolymer aggregate from fly ash

NTPC-Ramagundam has developed geo-polymer coarse aggregates as a replacement to natural aggregates for the construction of buildings after conducting a successful research project of laying road with geo-polymer substances composed of 90% fly ash.

The material developed by the NTPC-Ramagundam is to be used as part of the waste-to-best concept, said an official. The innovative entrepreneurship is being regarded as a fascinating conversion of fly ash generated from the thermal power plant into useful material as a segment of waste-to-best concept. A senior official associated with the research work stated that the increased use of fly as in various ways for various purposes is gradually turning into a useful by-product of thermal power plants.

NTPC-Ramagundam took up a research project to create an aggregate which uses more than 90% of fly ash. They successfully developed a geopolymer coarse aggregate to replace natural aggregates used in the construction of buildings. The National Council for Cement and Building Materials (NCCBM) tested the technical parameters of the newly developed geo-polymer.

The testing was conducted in Hyderabad for its suitability in construction work as per the Indian standards. The parameters of the newly developed material were found acceptable by the Council. They also recommended its use in construction as an alternative to natural aggregates.

An NTPC official said that geo-polymer will not only help in utilising fly ash, but will also save the environment, and also added that the newly developed aggregates will not require cement for using them in concrete.

The fly ash based geo-polymer mortar will act as a binding agent. The geo-polymer has the potential to reduce carbon emissions as well as water consumption. According to one assessment, about 2,000 million tonnes of aggregate is required every year for infrastructure development. The NTPC- Ramagundam developed geopolymer will assist in meeting the demand to a considerable degree. The geo-polymer aggregate will also lower the impact on the environment, which is caused due to natural aggregates by the quarrying of natural stone.
