Sindi Multimodal Logistics to Begin Operations In 2025
Sources indicate that the dry port, commonly referred to as the Sindi dry port, is likely to begin by exporting goods such as cotton, automobile parts, and transmission towers to Bangladesh. Plans are also being considered to deploy car carriers for the domestic transportation of automobiles. Car carriers are closed containers specifically designed to transport vehicles.
The facility at Sindi has been strategically developed to leverage the riverine route to Bangladesh, offering a faster and more cost-effective alternative to congested rail and road networks. Under the proposed plan, cargo will be transported by rail to Haldia in West Bengal, from where river vessels will carry it to Bangladesh. This route significantly reduces transport costs, enhancing the competitiveness of Indian exports.
Bangladesh remains a key trade partner, and exports from Sindi could include Vidarbha’s cotton, as well as tractors, two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and perishable commodities such as oranges and onions. The park’s central location also positions it as an ideal hub for domestic automobile transportation via car carriers.
The Sindi dry port is one of the flagship projects championed by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, who inaugurated the facility in December 2023. Gadkari had been working on the project since his previous tenure, aiming to bolster trade and logistics efficiency in the Vidarbha region.
Once operational, the Sindi Multimodal Logistics Park is expected to emerge as a centralized facility for domestic cargo transport, reducing reliance on scattered railway terminals and providing a significant boost to Vidarbha’s logistics sector.
