Srinagar smart city takes charge of parking zones in ITMS overhaul

The Srinagar Development Authority (SDA) has transferred control of numerous parking areas in the city to Srinagar Smart City Limited (SSCL), according to an official's statement on Monday. A senior SDA official informed a news agency that this step was taken to incorporate the management of the parking facilities in Srinagar into the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS).

Considering the implementation of ITMS and the subsequent management of parking zones within the same project, we have relinquished control of the city's multiple parking facilities to SSCL, stated the official. They further mentioned that the parking facilities include Press Enclave, Sheikh Bagh, mechanised car parking, and one located at Residency Road.

The official clarified that SDA will retain ownership of the properties; however, their management and maintenance will now be overseen by Srinagar Smart City Limited. "With the implementation of ITMS, real-time monitoring and information on parking space availability will be accessible as the project incorporates a command centre," explained the official.

The Intelligent Traffic Management System not only encompasses adaptive traffic control, but also detects violations such as running red lights, speeding, disregarding zebra crossings, and displays the status of parking spaces.

With the ITMS system now in place in Srinagar, traffic police authorities are optimistic that the new system will automatically detect evident traffic violations like speeding, driving without a helmet or seatbelt, driving on the wrong side or while using a mobile phone, traffic light violations, and even overloading in public transport.

Given the city's ongoing struggle to provide adequate parking facilities for vehicles, the Srinagar Development Authority recently operationalised a highly anticipated parking zone with a capacity of 300 vehicles in the Batamaloo area of Srinagar.
