Coimbatore to Speed Up Work on UGD, Water Supply Projects

The city corporation is planning to expedite the completion of the underground drainage (UGD) project and the 24x7 water supply scheme in order to alleviate the difficulties faced by the public due to ongoing work.

Corporation Commissioner M Sivaguru Prabhakaran stated that 98% of the UGD work on the Kurichi-Kuniyamuthur stretch in the south zone had been completed. However, progress has been slower on other stretches, including the Vellakinaru-Saravampatti stretch in the north zone, the Thudiyalur-Kovundampalayam-Veerakeralam stretch in the west zone, and at Ondipudur in the east zone. Only 20% of the work has been completed on the Vellakinaru-Saravampatti stretch, 25% on the Thudiyalur-Kovundampalayam-Veerakeralam stretch, and just 16% at Ondipudur. Prabhakaran emphasized that strict orders have been issued to contractors to restore the roads as quickly as possible.

The corporation has requested Rs 2 billion from the state government for road relaying work. They are expecting Rs 1 billion to be sanctioned in the first phase, with the remaining Rs 1 billion to be provided in the next financial year. Priority will be given to relaying main roads, and the roadwork will be carried out without interrupting the ongoing UGD and 24x7 water supply projects.

The UGD work has left several major stretches, such as the Kuniyamuthur-Palakkad highway, Ondipudur-Singanallur road, and Trichy Road, in poor condition, while the GN Mills Road on Mettupalayam Road was dug up for the Pillur-III project.

R Jayabalan, a regular commuter on GN Mills Road, expressed frustration, saying, "I travel from Thudiyalur every day via this route to my workplace at Saibaba Colony. It's been almost a year since the road was damaged." A resident of Bharathi Nagar also complained that authorities have not yet taken any steps to repair the damaged roads, despite several representations being made.
