BBMP proposes Rs 2k cr signal-free corridor for Tumkur Road

In a bid to decongest one of the busiest roads in Bengaluru, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has proposed a signal-free corridor on Tumkur road at a cost of Rs 2,000 crore.

The administrative body has prepared a plan to construct the signal-free corridor that includes six flyovers and underpasses at Tumkur road, Outer Ring Road, BEL, Taj Yeshwantpur junction, HMT junction and Pipeline road.

BBMP recently carried out an inspection, and has sent a detailed project report (DPR) to the state government seeking funds.

According to the DPR, which has now been submitted to the government, the signal-free corridor's requirement on the Tumkur road is due to heavy traffic congestion. According to officials, Goraguntepalya junction on Tumkur road sees nearly 1,000 vehicles stopping at the signal during weekends.

Bengaluru ranked sixth among 10 cities with the worst traffic in the TomTom World Traffic Index 2020.
