Vizag General Cargo Berth Pvt Ltd (VGCB), a Vedanta Aluminium unit, has handled India’s largest bauxite vessel to date—MV Captain Leonidas—at the Visakhapatnam Port. The vessel carried 199,500 metric tonnes (MT) of bauxite, marking a milestone in VGCB’s operational capacity and reinforcing its role as a major global transshipment hub.

With a beam of 50 metres, draft of 17.9 metres, and deadweight tonnage (DWT) of 203,095 MT, the vessel’s swift five-day offloading underscores VGCB’s infrastructure strength and efficiency. Last year, the terminal handled the largest manganese ore shipment at an Indian port via MV Huahine.

VGCB operates the General Cargo Berth at Vizag Port under a 30-year DBFOT concession awarded in 2010. The terminal, developed to reduce coal dust pollution and upgrade coal handling to a multi-cargo facility, continues to invest in modernisation. CEO Chikkala Sateesh Kumar highlighted the company’s commitment to enhancing Vizag’s global port standing and contributing to India’s maritime sector.
