The Defence Ministry announced a strategic collaboration between the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and Hindalco Industries, a leading industry group, aimed at bolstering the country's maritime capabilities. Through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in New Delhi, the two entities agreed to facilitate the manufacturing and supply of indigenous marine-grade aluminium to both public and private shipyards across India for ship construction projects.

This collaboration holds significant implications for enhancing domestic shipbuilding capabilities, as it ensures a reliable and consistent supply of essential materials required for constructing ships. The MoU entails various benefits, including quarterly pricing agreements, priority in supply allocation, and turnover discounts, aiming to streamline the procurement process and incentivize the utilization of indigenous resources.

Presently, the ICG operates a fleet comprising 67 ships equipped with aluminium hulls, enabling operations in shallow waters. In line with its commitment to bolstering coastal security measures, the ICG plans to expand its fleet with additional vessels featuring aluminium hulls manufactured using indigenous marine-grade aluminium. This strategic move not only strengthens India's maritime security infrastructure but also underscores the nation's commitment to self-reliance in defence production.

The signing ceremony of the MoU witnessed the presence of senior officials from both the Indian Coast Guard and Hindalco Industries, emphasizing the collaborative spirit and shared commitment to advancing India's maritime interests.
