Godinho: Mormugao Port requires additional berths for export, cargo
Speaking to business delegates from over 50 countries, Godinho highlighted that while Goa welcomed investments, the state sought only non-polluting industrial units. He explained that while the state was keen to develop tourism, MPA should also focus on increasing the number of berths dedicated to export and container business. Godinho expressed his vision of seeing Goa evolve into one of the largest trading hubs in the region. He appreciated the passenger terminal but reiterated the need for more berths and terminals for cargo exports.
Additionally, Godinho mentioned, "We welcome all industries that add value to Goa. We want non-polluting industries because we are concerned about preserving our environment."
Jerome Clement, the Senior Deputy Traffic Manager at MPA, shared that 50 per cent of the international cruise terminal at the harbour was ready. He noted that Ro-Pax services (roll-on/roll-off passenger) would begin once the terminal was fully operational. Clement also indicated that 20 international cruise liners were expected in Goa during the current season, with two domestic cruise liners arriving at MPA every week.
Officials revealed that the Goa-Mumbai Ro-Pax ferry with passenger cabins was expected to begin service in 2025. The ferry, which had already been purchased, is currently stationed in Mumbai. During the summit, several Goan companies began discussions for potential joint business ventures. Godinho expressed satisfaction with the exchange of ideas between Goan entrepreneurs and international participants, believing that these discussions would greatly contribute to strengthening the industrial sector. He stated that he would be most satisfied when many of the ideas discussed over the three days became a reality in the years ahead.
