Varkala Sivagiri Station Redevelopment Begins
With an estimated cost of Rs 123.36 crore allocated for engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) activities, the redevelopment is set to unfold over a period of 30 months. Simultaneously, the same consortium of agencies has secured another pivotal contract for the transformation of Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station, valued at Rs 439 crore in EPC mode, with an expected completion timeline of 42 months.
Progress on the Varkala station redevelopment is rapidly advancing, with the impending demolition of the existing structure scheduled to commence next month. Recent discussions during a review meeting at the Southern Railway headquarters have led to decisions regarding the incorporation of two entrances in the new station building, highlighting the project's commitment to efficient design and functionality.
Upon completion, the redeveloped Varkala Sivagiri railway station promises an array of upgraded passenger facilities, aesthetically pleasing interiors, and an overall improved ambiance. Exterior enhancements will include captivating landscaping, while the interior will exude a contemporary feel reminiscent of modern airports. Moreover, the revamped station will feature ample parking facilities and superior intermodal transport options, ensuring seamless connectivity for travelers.
Emphasizing inclusivity, the project's objectives underscore the importance of establishing an environment accessible to all, including individuals with disabilities. Specifications outlined in the bid document mandate the incorporation of features such as access ramps, elevators, tactile flooring, braille signage, and audio messages, among others, to guarantee a welcoming and barrier-free experience for every visitor.
Spanning an impressive 9,944 square meters, the main station building will encompass essential amenities including a departure air-concourse, an arrival foot overbridge (FOB), an extended FOB, a substation, internal roads, pathways, and stormwater drains, all designed to enhance functionality and efficiency.
As work progresses, the redevelopment of Varkala Sivagiri railway station stands as a testament to the collaborative efforts aimed at modernizing infrastructure and elevating the travel experience for passengers, ultimately contributing to the region's economic and touristic growth.
