Mumbai's metro network reached a significant milestone as the Chief Commissioner of Rail Safety (CCRS), New Delhi, granted safety certification for the regular operation of Metro Line 7 (Red Line) and Metro Line 2A (Yellow Line). This approval ensures compliance with all conditions from the provisional authorisation, enabling unrestricted operations at a full capacity speed of 80 kmph, up from temporary limits of 50-60 kmph.
Operated by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), Metro Line 2A spans 18.6 km from Dahisar to DN Nagar with 17 stations, while Metro Line 7 covers 16.5 km from Andheri (East) to Dahisar (East) with 13 stations. Together, they cater to over 250,000 daily passengers, boasting a cumulative ridership exceeding 150 million since operations began.
The MMRDA has equipped these lines with advanced technologies, including driverless-capable trainsets, Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling, platform screen doors, and modern ticketing systems. These upgrades align with the vision of "Mumbai in Minutes," emphasising safety, eco-friendliness, and efficiency.
Hon. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stated, "The regular authorisation of Metro Lines 7 and 2A is a step closer to making Mumbai a world-class city with a robust transport network. It demonstrates our government’s commitment to providing sustainable, time-saving, and eco-friendly mobility options for Mumbaikars."
Deputy Chief Minister and MMRDA Chairman, Eknath Shinde, hailed the metro expansion as transformative, noting that it significantly reduces congestion on key routes and enhances the quality of life for commuters. "We remain dedicated to further developing Mumbai's metro network to meet the city's growing needs," he said.
Metropolitan Commissioner Dr Sanjay Mukherjee emphasised MMRDA's adherence to safety standards and operational excellence. "This achievement enhances the metro experience and propels us toward our goal of 'Mumbai in Minutes,'" he remarked.
The regular authorisation of Metro Lines 7 and 2A underscores MMRDA's commitment to revolutionising urban mobility, offering Mumbaikars a faster, safer, and more sustainable commuting option.
