Mumbai Completes Construction of Underground Metro Tunnel
Metro Line 7A spans 3.4 kilometres, of which 2.5 kilometres are underground and 0.94 kilometres are elevated. This line plays a critical role in strengthening east-west connectivity in the Western Suburbs and directly links to the international airport. TBM operations began in September 2023, with the machine positioned 30 metres underground. Since then, it has navigated challenging geological conditions, including steep gradients and underground utilities like sewage and water pipelines. The tunnel has a diameter of 6.35 metres and is lined with specially designed precast concrete rings to ensure structural integrity across six zones.
This achievement is both a technical and environmental milestone, contributing to climate-friendly urban mobility. Metro Line 7A is designed to integrate seamlessly with existing and upcoming corridors, including Lines 2A, 7, and 9, facilitating direct travel from Mira-Bhayandar and Vasai-Virar to CSMIA. The broader vision includes future connections to Navi Mumbai International Airport, enhancing regional connectivity.
With approximately 59 per cent of construction completed, the breakthrough is expected to accelerate the remaining work. Metro Line 7A represents a crucial step in Mumbai’s aim to reduce emissions, ease traffic congestion, and build resilient, people-centric infrastructure.
