Maha-Metro to deliver Nalstop flyover to Pune Corp by Feb 23

Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (Maha Metro) assured that by February 23, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) would receive the flyover after finishing touches. Once the flyover is in PMC's hand, it would be open to the public immediately.

The double-decker flyover at Nalstop chowk on Karve road can be opened to the public by the end of this week. The work is completed by the Maharashtra Metro rail Corporation (Maha Metro).

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which manages the civic body, has been pushing to open the flyover to traffic ahead of the civic polls.

While the polls will be conducted in March, the model code of conduct may come into force by March-mid because of which any formal inauguration would not take place at that time.

Murlidhar Mohol, the Mayor, told the media that work on the flyover is in its final stage, and officials of Maha Metro assured that by February 23, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) would receive the flyover after finishing touches. Once the flyover is in PMC's hand, it would be open to the public immediately.

Initially, PMC proposed a flyover at Nalstop chowk around the same time when the elevated metro had been planned on Karve road.

As both the projects had the same location, the Maha Metro suggested the double-decker flyover on the stretch (executed at Jaipur and Nagpur).

Then PMC gave the flyover work to the Maha Metro, which would also help save cost. The private vehicles would use the first floor, and elevated metro rail would use the second one.

Mohol approved the funds for the flyover when he was the standing committee chairman. The 572-metre long flyover would be necessary for commuters on Karve road, which witnesses heavy traffic.

The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has planned a similar double-decker flyover at Savitribai Phule university chowk. The 572-metre long flyover is 6.1 metres in width.

PMC contributed Rs 30 crore, and the Maha Metro would add Rs 26 crore to construct this flyover. It includes 13 pillars, with three in the middle of Nalstop square.

The top tier of the flyover would be for the metro rail, while the lower would cater to vehicular traffic.

The flyover begins after SNDT Chowk on Karve road, would go over Nalstop chowk, and end right before the next square.
