Kolkata Set to Get Its First Airport Metro Link by July

Kolkata Metro is gearing up to launch its much-awaited Noapara Airport metro line by July 2025, subject to final clearance from the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS). This milestone will mark Kolkata’s first metro link to the airport, significantly improving connectivity for commuters and travelers.

Asia’s Largest Underground Airport Metro Station The hub station, previously known as Jai Hind Metro Station, is situated 13 meters below the historic Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport. Spanning 29,000 square meters, it is regarded as one of Asia’s largest underground metro facilities, designed to accommodate an estimated 80,000 daily commuters.

Phase One of the Yellow Line Expansion The Noapara Airport metro link is part of Phase One of the 18-kilometer Noapara-Barasat Yellow Line corridor. Initially planned as a three-kilometer Noapara-Dum Dum Cantonment stretch, it secured CRS approval. However, the phase was extended by four kilometers, with a CRS inspection scheduled for April for the Dum Dum Cantonment–Bimanbandar stretch.

If all approvals are granted on time, the metro service could begin as early as June or July 2025.

Station Layout and Facilities For now, Platforms One and Two will be operational, while Platforms Three, Four, and Five will serve the Orange Line (New Garia-Airport Corridor), intersecting the Yellow Line at the airport.

The station will also feature:

Two subways

One connects to Airport Gate No. 1, with two walkalators for airline passengers.

The other links to Jessore Road, serving commuters from Birati, Barasat, Madhyamgram, and North 24 Parganas.

Eight ticket counters, including two specially designed for persons with disabilities.

Six escalators, four lifts, and two emergency staircases for smooth passenger movement.

A 17,497-square-meter stabling yard with seven tracks, located 300 meters from the station.

Conclusion The launch of Kolkata’s first metro link to the airport is set to transform urban mobility in the city. By easing congestion and providing seamless connectivity to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, this metro expansion will enhance travel convenience, improve public transport efficiency, and boost economic development in the region.
