Indian Railways has completed the detailed project report (DPR) for the first-ever railway link between India and Bhutan, marking a significant step in strengthening regional connectivity. The proposed rail line will connect Gelephu in Bhutan with Kokrajhar in Assam, facilitating trade, tourism, and transportation between the two nations.

The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has successfully completed the final location survey for the project, and the DPR is now awaiting approval. Spanning 69.04 kilometre, the railway line is estimated to cost Rs 35 billion and will include the construction of six new stations—Balajan, Garubhasa, Runikhata, Shantipur, Dadgiri, and Gelephu. The project also encompasses extensive infrastructure development, including two significant bridges, 29 major bridges, 65 minor bridges, one road over-bridge, 39 road under-bridges, and two viaducts of 11 metre each.

This railway link will integrate Bhutan into India’s extensive rail network, enhancing transport efficiency for both passengers and goods. It is also expected to boost economic activities in the Bodoland Territorial Region by positioning it as a key trade and transit hub. Local businesses and communities are likely to benefit from improved logistics and increased commercial opportunities.

In addition to economic advantages, the new rail link is set to promote tourism by providing a more accessible and efficient travel option for visitors between India and Bhutan. The project aligns with national strategic initiatives, supporting policies aimed at strengthening regional cooperation and connectivity in South Asia.
