Haryana Metro expansions and rapid metro ridership surge

In an announcement made during the 53rd meeting of the board of directors of HMRTC in Chandigarh, Haryana Chief Secretary and HMRTC Chairman, Sanjeev Kaushal, revealed significant developments in the expansion of the Metro rail network.

The preparatory work for the proposed Metro extension from Ballabhgarh to Palwal, covering a distance of approximately 25 km, has already commenced. The crucial techno-feasibility study for this extension has been awarded to RITES (Rail India Technical and Economic Service). Additionally, RITES has been assigned the responsibility of preparing the detailed project report (DPR) for the Metro rail project from Vatika Chowk to Pachgaon, spanning a length of 30 km.

Sanjeev Kaushal emphasised the importance of these projects as they will serve as test cases for the Haryana government's commitment to completing them within the shortest possible timeframe. The proposed Ballabhgarh to Palwal corridor is expected to include 10 tentative stations along its route.

Regarding the Rapid Metro project, Kaushal highlighted its remarkable growth in ridership. Between April 1 and June 30, 2023, the number of riders increased to 3,397,221, a significant surge of 51.78 per cent compared to the corresponding period in the previous year, demonstrating the increasing popularity and usage of the Rapid Metro service.

To ensure a comprehensive and systematic approach to the projects, Kaushal stressed the need to gather input from all stakeholders, including passengers, commuters, and residents. He encouraged HMRTC to establish a dedicated social media handle for the seamless sharing of passengers' suggestions and feedback.
