Chennai Metro's Phase 2 Construction Progress

The construction work for Chennai Metro's Phase 2 is progressing rapidly, with 90% of the tunneling work completed along several key corridors. This phase of the Chennai Metro expansion is set to transform urban transportation in the city by significantly enhancing connectivity. Phase 2 of the metro system covers a massive 118.9 kilometers and includes three major corridors, stretching from Madhavaram to SIPCOT, Light House to Poonamallee, and CMBT to Sholinganallur. This expansion will link some of the city’s busiest and fast-growing regions, reducing commute times and easing road traffic congestion.

The ongoing work focuses on tunneling and the construction of underground stations, with a total of 48 underground stations planned. According to reports, the Madhavaram to Taramani stretch has seen the most progress, where tunneling operations are nearly complete. The corridor linking Madhavaram and SIPCOT alone spans 45.8 kilometers, and this line will play a critical role in connecting the northern and southern regions of Chennai.

Once completed, the Phase 2 corridors will not only cater to millions of daily commuters but also integrate seamlessly with other transportation systems, such as the suburban railway network and bus services. This will enable smoother and more efficient travel across Chennai, making it a key infrastructure project for the city's future.

The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) aims to complete this phase by 2026, with officials hopeful of adhering to the timeline due to the current pace of work. The development is expected to spur economic growth, reduce carbon emissions from vehicular traffic, and contribute to a more sustainable urban environment. Additionally, with enhanced metro coverage, several areas currently underserved by public transportation will have improved access.

The Phase 2 project stands as a critical element in shaping Chennai’s urban mobility landscape, reducing traffic congestion, and providing a modern, efficient public transit system.
