Chennai Metro Rail (CMRL) phase I project is expected to undergo a significant upgrade to meet future demand, costing Rs 28 billion. To address the increasing number of passengers using the trains, the CMRL has engaged a consultant to conduct a study on acquiring additional coaches.

The consultant's preliminary report indicated the need for approximately 168 coaches or 28 six-coach trains for the phase I project in the near future. Consequently, alongside procuring more trains, they must also enhance the facilities, including the signalling system and platform screen doors. Additionally, modifications will be made to the stations to accommodate the six-coach trains. The CMRL will present these findings to the State government for further action.

Regarding funding, the CMRL is currently in discussions with an international bank. An official stated that obtaining approval from both the State government and the Centre will be necessary for the funding arrangement.

The phase I project commenced over a decade ago with a budget of Rs 146 billion. Its completion occurred in stages, with the final section from AG-DMS to Washermanpet opening to the public in 2019. Initially serving around 10,000 passengers daily, the ridership has now increased to over 2.5 lakh per day. However, sources indicate that this figure falls short of the projected ridership of over 7 lakh per day.
