Chennai Metro Phase II Project Nears 40% Completion, Says Lok Sabha Reply
Nearly 40% of Chennai Metro Rail’s Phase II project has been completed, as revealed in a reply in the Lok Sabha. The Phase II project, spanning 118.9 km and costing Rs 63,246 crore, is designed to provide faster commuting options across the city. It consists of three corridors: Madhavaram to SIPCOT (Corridor 3), Light House to Poonamallee (Corridor 4), and Madhavaram to Sholinganallur (Corridor 5).
Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs, Tokhan Sahu, informed the Lok Sabha that Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), the Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) for the project, reported physical progress at 40.41% and financial progress at 32.74%. The project will have 128 stations with both elevated and underground sections across the three corridors. The first stretch available for passenger services will be the 9 km elevated section from Poonamallee to Porur on Corridor 4. While the elevated sections are progressing well, only 19 km of the 50.5 km underground tunnelling has been completed.
The Poonamallee to Porur stretch is expected to be operational by December 2025, with work progressing on stations and tracks. An extension from Porur to Kodambakkam is also planned for a few months later.
