Chenab Bridge: World's Highest Single Arch Bridge Set to Open Soon
The 46-kilometer stretch between Sangaldan and Reasi is under scrutiny, with Commissioner of Railways Safety (CRS) D C Deshwal scheduled to inspect the section over two days, June 27 and 28. Deepak Kumar, Northern Railway?s chief public relations officer, confirmed that all necessary preparations are on track for the CRS inspection.
Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh announced on X, "Train service from #Ramban to #Reasi via the world?s highest railway bridge built on river Chenab to begin soon. The #Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (#USBRL) project will be completed by year-end."
About the Bridge Cost and Objectives
The Chenab Bridge, constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 140 billion, is a critical component of the Rs 350 billion Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Link (USBRL) project. This ambitious endeavor aims to enhance connectivity in the challenging geography and weather conditions of Jammu and Kashmir.
Challenges
The project?s challenges are monumental, involving the construction of 63 kilometers of tunnels and 7.5 kilometers of bridges in the formidable Himalayan geology. The bridge?s location, spanning the deep gorge of the Chenab River near the Salal Hydro Power Dam, represents the most difficult segment.
Features
The Chenab Rail Bridge features a broad span single arch design with approach viaducts on either side. It utilizes large steel trusses, with the arch comprising two ribs. To withstand wind pressures, the truss chords are filled with concrete, eliminating the need for interior painting and adding to the structure's durability.
Opening Date and Routes While the exact opening date remains unconfirmed, railway sources suggest the inaugural train between Sangaldan and Reasi is likely to operate on June 30. Once operational, the train service from Ramban to Reasi will pass over the Chenab Bridge, further integrating with the existing routes from Baramulla to Sangaldan and from Kanyakumari to Katra, significantly boosting connectivity in the region.
