The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) Standing Committee has reviewed a proposal to add a new station to the planned Metro Line 1 between Swargate and Katraj.

The proposed station will be located at Balajinagar, a site expected to experience higher commuter footfall. According to the proposal, Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) will cover the full cost of constructing the station, utilizing land to be provided by the PMC.

Initially, the Swargate-Katraj route included three stations: Market Yard, Padmawadi, and Katraj. However, following requests from local residents, Khadakwasla MLA Bhimrao Tapkir urged the PMC and Maha-Metro to include an additional station at Balajinagar. Consequently, Maha-Metro submitted a proposal for this fourth station to the civic body.

Atul Gadgil, Director (Works) of Pune Metro, explained that the proposal for an additional station on the Swargate-Katraj underground Metro extension had been presented to the PMC for preliminary approval. He noted that the proposal would be reviewed in the Standing Committee and General Body meetings before being forwarded to the state government for final approval.

In September, Maha-Metro had also requested a land parcel from the PMC to facilitate the construction of the Balajinagar station as part of the Swargate-Katraj Metro extension.
