7 Companies Bid for Chennai Metro Line-5 E&M Contract

After Chennai Metro Rail Ltd. (CMRL) launched technical proposals, 7 companies have submitted bids for the C5-EM-04 electrical & mechanical (E&M), fire protection, ventilation, and air-conditioning contract for Chennai Metro Line-5. To connect Madhavaram Milk Colony and Sholinganallur, the 116.1 km long Phase 2 line of the Chennai Metro will operate in a north-south direction.

System improvements at 22 elevated stations as well as the viaduct between Koyambedu Market and Elcot Park stations are included in the scope of this contract. Larsen & Toubro is building the Koyambedu Market - Puzhuthivakkam portion (Package C5-ECV-02), and HCC - KEC JV is building the Puzhuthivakkam - Elcot Park segment (Package C5-ECV-03).

The deadline for completion was 810 days (2.2 years), and CMRL had requested bids for this essential contract in February 2023 with an undetermined estimate.

For Corridor 5 of the Chennai Metro Rail Project, Phase-II, CMRL's brief scope is to supply, install, test, commission, and train on electrical, fire protection, and VAC works for 22 elevated stations from Koyambedu Market Metro to Elcot Park Metro, as well as the viaduct between the stations (Ch: 15576 to Ch. 45300).

The technical bid evaluation, which could take a few months, has now received the bids. The financial bids of the technically qualifying bidders will next be opened to disclose the lowest bidder, who is most likely to be the contractor.

Although CMRL is making progress on system contracts, they still haven't released re-tender notices for the purchase of train sets for Line-3 and Line-5. Package ARE-04 for leasing 126 coaches was canceled in December 2021 after obtaining a subpar response from rolling stock manufacturers, while Package ARE-02 for 210 coaches was canceled in June 2022 after receiving no offers.
