Western Ring Road Construction Hits 30% Milestone

The state highways department has achieved 30% completion of Phase I of the Western Ring Road project, which commenced in August 2023. The first phase, spanning 11.80 km, is projected to be finished by September 2025, slightly beyond the original schedule.

The Western Ring Road will connect Mylkal on the Salem-Cochin Road with Narasimhanaickenpalayam on the Nagapattinam-Gudalur-Mysore Road. The 32.43 km road will be constructed in three phases. Phase I will cover sections through Madukkarai, Sundakkamuthur, and Perur Chettipalayam, while Phase II and III will extend the road further.

Progress has been delayed by issues including sand shortages and the need for the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) to complete Siruvani pipeline shifting. Despite these setbacks, 3 km of Phase I has been paved. The project team is also addressing safety concerns, having installed barricades after a recent accident. The completion of land acquisition for Phase II is nearly done, with full completion expected in about two months.
