Uttarakhand Chief Minister Tirath Singh Rawat has approved the widening of the 19 km Ghat-Nandprayag road in Chamoli district following large-scale protests from locals.

Residents of around 70 villages of the area had been protesting for the last few months in favour of their demand. Following this, Rawat approved the project and directed the concerned authorities to start the work at the earliest. He told the officials of finance, planning and the Public Works Department to coordinate and begin the project.

All-Weather Char Dham Road status. The state government has also stated that the widening of about 554 km on the Char Dham highway under the All-Weather Char Dham Road project has been completed. The government told the media that about 556 km of utility duct along the highway has also been completed, and that retaining and breast walls have been erected for 367 km of the stretch. A meeting was held to review the Rs 12,000 project that connects the shrines at Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri in the Himalayan state.

However, geology experts have questioned whether the road can be truly “all-weather” in the higher reaches without risking the natural phenomena of landslides.
