The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is redesigning the vehicular underpass (VUP) at Maruthi Nagar, which serves as the entry point to the city from the Chennai-Tiruchi-Thoothukudi National Highway. This decision follows a lackluster response from contractors to multiple tenders floated for the project.

To address the traffic congestion at the intersection, the NHAI initially planned to construct a six-lane overbridge near Maruthi Nagar to allow through-traffic to pass over. The plan also included a vehicular underpass, with the existing carriageways intended to accommodate vehicles entering and exiting the highway. The project was estimated to cost approximately Rs 450 million.

The intersection, located on a curve and experiencing heavy traffic round-the-clock, was identified as a critical point for intervention. To manage traffic, an automatic traffic signal was installed, and police set up barricades to slow vehicles and reduce the risk of accidents.

NHAI sources stated that tenders for the project had been issued three times but failed to attract sufficient bids. Contractors were reportedly hesitant due to the challenging location, which would complicate the movement of workers and materials. Additionally, arrangements for traffic diversions during construction posed logistical hurdles.

Considering these challenges, the NHAI opted to revise the structure's design. It is hoped that the new design will make the project more appealing to potential bidders. 

Sources added that the NHAI aims to bring the project to the execution stage before the end of the current financial year.
