Madurai roads to get a makeover
Corporation Commissioner Simranjeet Singh Kahlon said that the civic body has divided the roads into three categories:
Roads that have been damaged for more than five years.
Roads that were accidentally damaged during the laying of underground drainage (UGD) pipelines and the AMRUT drinking water pipeline.
New areas that require new roads.
The corporation has made plans to lay roads simultaneously after laying pipelines, as many road laying works are stopped due to UGD or AMRUT work, said the commissioner.
According to a senior corporation official, old paving slabs will be removed and new ones with bitumen roads will be laid in Kattu Nayakan Street, Vaithiyanathan Street, Kanji Kodangi Street, Kodikatha Kumaran Street, Lakshmanan Street, Prasad Road, Odakarai Main Road, Sankar Lane, Govintha Lane and Vayakattu Lane.
The Ponmeni-Pudur Road up to Arunachalam Apartment will be repaired as the old road has been damaged for years. The most affected roads in the city, including Rajeev Gandhi Nagar Main Road and Karumbalai Sugar Cane Factory Road, will also be resurfaced with bitumen.
“In the next phase, Uchaparambumedu Main Road, Bharathiyar Main Road, Pudur Vandi Pathai Road and many other roads in the new areas will be repaired,” said the official.
In addition, the corporation plans to carry out spot repairs on roads that have been damaged by the summer rains. “The spot repairs will be carried out by the contractors who are laying the adjacent roads,” the official added.
