Lakhanpur-Doda Highway to Revolutionize Connectivity

In a significant move towards the development of Jammu and Kashmir, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government has announced plans to enhance connectivity in the region with the construction of the Lakhanpur-Doda highway. This strategic project is part of a broader vision to transform J&K into a developed region in the coming years.

The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Lakhanpur-Basohli-Bani-Bhaderwah-Doda National Highway has been finalized, revealing that the new route will reduce the travel distance by more than 100 kilometers. Currently, the journey from Lakhanpur to Doda via NH44 spans approximately 260 kilometers. The new highway will cut this distance to about 140 kilometers, significantly easing travel and enhancing accessibility.

Among the notable features is the proposed Balasundari Tunnel, which will streamline the route from Rajbagh through the hills of Mata Balasundari in Billawar, reducing the distance between Sheetalnagar in Basohli and Bani. Additionally, the 6.8-km Chattergala tunnel will connect the erstwhile Doda region to Kathua, bypassing the Chattergala top.

Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh, representing the Kathua-Udhampur constituency, emphasized the project's economic and social benefits. "Once completed, the highway will not only cut travel time but also boost trade, create employment, and generate revenue for the locals," he said. Dr. Singh noted that the project, estimated at over Rs 40 billion, is expected to take six to seven years to complete.

The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has taken up the construction, ensuring that the project addresses both security concerns and the need for all-weather connectivity. This initiative, originally conceived in 2015-16, has gained new momentum with the finalized DPR and plans to commence construction.

The Lakhanpur-Doda highway is set to be a game-changer for the region, fostering tourism, enhancing security, and contributing to the overall progress of Jammu and Kashmir.
