On Sunday, the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) told the media that an internal road connecting Golf Course Road (GCR) and Dhani Chowk in Sector 53 would be built as a model road, officials of the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG).
The 1.5 km stretch, called Khatu Shyam Mandir Marg, will render an alternative route and would aid commuters of Sector 53 and DLF 5 bypassing the heavily congested St Thomas Marg.
On the GCR side, the stretch is situated between South Point Mall and Parsvnath Exotica residential society and ends at Dhani Chowk near Ardee Mall, situated on the road that links Golf Course Extension Road to Huda City Centre. Although Khatu Shyam Mandir Marg passes behind residential regions of DLF 5, the residents have not been given access to it.
As per the officials, any road free of potholes and encroachments, and possessing sufficient terms for pedestrians with dedicated footpaths, benches, green belts, bins, and parking spaces is called a model road.
Sunder Sheoran, executive engineer, MCG, who is overseeing the project, told the media that last week, a consultant for the project was elected, and they are making estimates. Then the project will be done before the finance and contract committee for approval, following which bids for deciding a contractor will be invited.
MCG ward 31 councillor Kuldeep Bohra told the media that the civic body sanctioned a Rs 1.53 crore plan for improving the stretch.
Presently, the 1.5 km road is observed as an internal pothole-ridden village road. With enough facilities as part of the model road project, it can have the same importance as the more prominent St Thomas Marg.
During a house meeting on July 31 this year, Bohra had floated an agenda for building model roads in all 35 municipal wards of the city, which got finally sanctioned.
For approximately three months, there was no progress on the issue. In the past month’s house meeting, he again raised the model road matter, which urged MCG authorities to act on the problem. The MCG has decided the Khatu Shyam Mandir Marg as the site for the model road.
The 2 km long St Thomas Marg carries a heavy volume of traffic between Genpact Chowk on GCR and Kanhai Chowk. Residents say that due to the heavy traffic, crossing the stretch during peak hours takes about 15-20 minutes.
