GMLR flyover in Mumbai opens after delay of three years
The flyover, which is 2.9 km long, is vital for motorists as it will decrease the travel time by 25 minutes on the congested Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road by connecting it to the road leading towards Vashi, especially on Baiganwadi Junction at Shivaji Nagar. Satish Thosar, Chief Engineer, bridges department, told the media that the flyover would be opened after its inauguration for motorists.
The construction of the flyover began in 2016. The standing committee has cleared a proposal of cost escalation and extension of the deadline for the work in February 2020. The cost of the project went up from the initial Rs 576 crore to Rs 713 crore. January 2019 was the original deadline of the project. The contractor has been imposed a fine of Rs 40 lakh by the BMC for the delay.
The officials told the media that the delay occurred mainly because of the construction of an additional arm for the Deonar dumping ground. Another official from the BMC told the media that the arm for Deonar dumping ground is also ready. It will help garbage vans reach the site seamlessly, and that the entire flyover will provide much relief for the motorists using Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road.
A proposal was cleared in a works committee meeting after Shivaji Maharaj on July 29.
