Gadkari MPs from Delhi have submitted a proposal to Union transport minister Nitin Gadkari for four projects to ease traffic congestion and reduce pollution in the national capital, East Delhi MP Harsh Malhotra said.
Addressing a press conference, Malhotra, who is the Union minister of state for road transport and highways, said the BJP MPs discussed traffic and pollution with Gadkari and submitted the proposal to him.
The MPs proposed the construction of an underground tunnel from Shiv Murti to Nelson Mandela Marg, reducing travel time from the airport to Delhi to about 7-8 minutes. All seven MPs from Delhi - Malhotra, Manoj Tiwari, Ramvir Singh Bidhuri, Bansuri Swaraj, Kamaljeet Sehrawat, Praveen Khandelwal and Yogender Chandolia - were present at the press conference. The MPs also suggested extending the Delhi-Katra Expressway to link it with the Kundli-Manesar-Palwal (KMP) Expressway and Urban Extension Road (UER) 2, providing direct connectivity between Delhi and Gurgaon.
Another proposal involved building an expressway from UER 2 at Alipur to Tronica City UP, which would divert Haryana-bound traffic from Delhi, reducing congestion within the city, Malhotra said.
An eastern extension of UER 2 would provide direct access to Noida and Ghaziabad from Dehradun without having to pass through Delhi, he said.
South Delhi MP Bidhuri said that these four projects would serve as milestones in reducing life-threatening pollution, growing congestion, and traffic jams. "These measures would not only make commuting more convenient for Delhi residents but also help in regulating the number of vehicles entering from outside," he said. Malhotra said that under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union minister Gadkari's leadership, 55,000km of national highways were laid in the past decade.
"Landmark projects such as the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, nearing completion, will soon be operational, drastically cutting travel time. Similarly, the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, spanning 1,250km, will reduce travel from 36 hours to just 12 hours," he said.
The Delhi-Meerut Expressway, inaugurated by PM Modi, is functional, he added. The Urban Extension Road (UER 2 project, costing Rs 36 BILLION and funded by the authority, connects NH-44 (Delhi-Chandigarh Highway) to NH-48 in south Delhi through a stretch between Bawana, Narela-Kanjhawala, Mundka and Dwarka, among other areas.
