Second Airport Nod for Chennai

The Union Government has granted in-principle approval for Chennai’s second airport at Parandur, paving the way for a major boost to the state’s aviation infrastructure. Located around 70 km from the city, the Parandur site will help decongest the existing airport and accommodate future air traffic growth.

Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) submitted a detailed proposal seeking clearance for the greenfield project, which is set to be developed on nearly 4,971 acres of land. The airport, once operational, is expected to handle over 100 million passengers annually in its ultimate phase.

With environmental and state-level approvals already in place, the project now moves into the land acquisition stage. Authorities have assured transparency and appropriate compensation for affected residents. Estimated at Rs 200.00 bn, the Parandur airport is envisioned to be a game-changer for the region, enhancing domestic and international connectivity while also spurring industrial development in surrounding areas.
