New SOP expected on 5G airwave infra around airports

The aviation and telecommunications departments will soon release a plan to ensure safe flight operations near airports equipped with 5G airwave infrastructure. The plan calls for telecom companies to build infrastructure to power 5G networks in the country away from the flight path around airports, to carry low-power signals in such areas, and to upgrade the altimeters on all aircraft operating in the country by August 2023.

These are expected to be included in operational guidelines that the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is currently preparing, following concerns raised by India's aviation regulator about interference caused by 5G signals, which could jeopardise safe airline operations.
