IGBC Green Cities Platinum certification accreditation for BACL

For its remarkable green master plan, design, and policy interventions, Bengaluru Airport City Limited (BACL), a fully owned subsidiary of Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), has received the coveted Indian Green Building Council's (IGBC) Green Cities Platinum award. The certification acknowledges BACL's master planning in a number of areas, including green space, sustainable transportation, water management, energy efficiency, waste management, and information and communication technology (ICT).

BACL is establishing new benchmarks for urban development that is sustainable. To realise its comprehensive vision of sustainable development, BACL offers sustainability-centric urban design principles with required regulations and design interventions that architects, designers, engineers, concessionaries, and developers must adhere to.

The coveted project includes various features:

  • A compact, mixed-use development with 15% set aside for green space. Also, there are around 55 acres of public spaces within a 400-meter walking distance of the Airport City, including sizable gardens, amphitheatres, and water features with landscape walks.
  • Complete road network with designated pedestrian and bicycle lanes and tree planting to promote sustainable mobility; 100% barrier-free accessibility in public spaces;
  • Mandatory certification of buildings as "green buildings.
  • Connectivity between bus, suburban rail, and metro rail enabling multimodal integration

  • Sets a goal of using both on-site and off-site renewable energy sources to attain 100% renewable energy consumption.
  • Waste management strives to divert zero waste to landfills and implement an integrated waste management system that addresses 100% waste segregation, a minimum of 60% waste recycling, and less than 5% inert waste to landfills.
  • ICT applications include an airport city App, smart water metres, smart street lighting, smart traffic management, and smart infrastructure for city surveillance.
  • Using plastic trash generated during road building as a first step towards responsible plastic recycling
  • A futuristic metropolis that will welcome innovation and serve as a launching pad for "Global Urban Solutions," Airport City is being developed by BACL to standards that will be unheard of. Aiming to develop the ideal blend of asset classes, this multi-asset destination includes business parks, R&D hubs, global capabilities centers, education & health district, hospitality, central park, multifunctional concert arena, retail, dining & entertainment village, among others.
