The Central government has approved the long-awaited Mamnoor airport project in Warangal, following persistent appeals from the Telangana government. The state had been seeking clearance despite a rule prohibiting new airports within 150 km of Shamshabad airport. In November 2024, the Telangana government approached the Airports Authority of India (AAI) after Hyderabad International Airport Limited (HIAL) issued a ‘No Objection Certificate’. 

Following this, the state was instructed to hand over 253 acres to AAI for the development of Warangal Airport, which is currently a non-operational AAI facility. The Ministry of Civil Aviation has directed AAI to begin construction at Mamnoor. 

Of the total 696 acres designated for the airport, the newly allocated 253 acres will primarily be used for runway expansion, a terminal building, Air Traffic Control, navigation equipment installation, and other infrastructure. 

Operations at Mamnoor airport had been closed for nearly three decades, with the facility only being used for training aircraft. Telangana’s Roads and Buildings Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy expressed gratitude to the Centre for approving the project, marking a significant step toward enhancing regional air connectivity.
