AAI Finalizes Airspace Design for Navi Mumbai & Noida
As India’s designated Air Navigation Service Provider (ANSP), AAI is responsible for managing air navigation services nationwide, including at the new Navi Mumbai and Noida airports. AAI’s specialized airspace and flight procedure design teams have meticulously developed the airspace structure and Instrument Flight Procedures (IFPs) for both projects.
In collaboration with Boeing India, AAI utilized advanced simulations and conflict analysis through Boeing’s Total Airspace and Airport Modeler (TAAM) in Bengaluru. This process enabled precise validation and refinement of Standard Instrument Departures and Standard Terminal Arrivals, ensuring seamless integration with existing air traffic networks.
These procedures are designed to enhance flight efficiency, minimizing emissions, reducing track miles, and optimizing flight times, particularly in the busy Delhi-Mumbai air corridor. The initiative also highlights AAI’s capability in handling complex airspace configurations near some of the country's busiest airports.
AAI Chairman’s Statement Vipin Kumar, Chairman of AAI, stated:
“The joint efforts have facilitated the safe and efficient integration of operations at these new airports with existing operations in Delhi IGI and Mumbai CSMIA airports. The anticipated increase in air traffic in both terminal areas will be managed in a way that conserves fuel and track miles for airlines, while also alleviating the workload for air traffic controllers and maintaining safe separation between aircraft at neighbouring international airports. This initiative marks the initial phase of expanding operations along the Delhi-Mumbai corridor, paving the way for a modern metroplex solution in the years to come.”
Following successful flight validation by a domestic airline, the IFPs have received approval from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) India for implementation. These new procedures will significantly improve efficiency, safety, and sustainability in India’s most congested airspaces.
