Tata, Germany SMS group to explore low carbon steel making

To investigate the development of a low carbon steel manufacturing process, Tata Steel has teamed up with the German SMS business. According to the MoU, both businesses will conduct additional technical conversations and take steps to produce a joint industrial demonstration of the EASyMelt technology created by SMS group.

The demonstration would be carried out at Tata Steel's E Blast Furnace in Jamshedpur with the aim of cutting CO2 emissions by more than 50% from baseline operation, the company said.

Iron production can be accelerated by the use of the EASyMelt (electric-assisted syngas smelter) technology in integrated steel plants that are already in operation.
