Ministry asks steel-makers to explore inland waterways for logistics

The Steel Ministry has advised Indian steelmakers to use the waterway route for shipping in the sector. At least two companies, Tata Steel in the private sector and SAIL in the public sector, have been instructed to investigate and plan for this possibility.

According to the conference minutes from the end of August, "SAIL and Tata Steel (are) to present a note with specific actionable points" on "using waterways for logistics purposes in the steel sector."

The report is expected to be completed by the next meeting, which is slated for September 21. Using waterways offers significant financial savings in addition to being a non-polluting option.
