India to become a responsible steel producer by adopting green steel
According to the Union Minister, in order to promote the production of green steel in India, the government is considering mandating the use of 'green steel' in government projects and is also in talks with steel manufacturing companies about dedicating a portion of their production to the production of green steel.
The minister went on to say that the government is working to change the steel industry's long-standing reputation as a carbon-emitting "hard to abate sector" into a low-carbon-emitting green steel-producing industry.
To minimise carbon emissions from the sector, he noted, the government is pushing the use of renewable energy to manufacture steel, extending the use of scrap in the sector, and investigating the use of green hydrogen as a furnace fuel.
Green steel was introduced by Saarloha Advanced Materials, a Kalyani group firm, under the brand Kalyani FeRRESTA.
He also stated that the plant where green steel is manufactured has a capacity of 250,000 tonnes of steel, but only 20% of that capacity will be used to make green steel in the first year.
