The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has successfully launched a 65-metre-long steel span on the Thane–Bhiwandi stretch of Mumbai Metro Line 5, marking a major milestone for the corridor. 

Weighing 456 metric tons, the open web girder bridge was installed overnight across the busy Vasai–Diva railway line at Anjurphata in Bhiwandi, linking two metro piers between Kharbav and Bhiwandi stations. Standing 20 metres above the ground, the span is a crucial part of the elevated viaduct for Metro Line 5. 

This complex operation required tight coordination between MMRDA, Central Railway, and traffic authorities, due to the challenging site conditions involving a busy roadway and active rail tracks. 

Once completed, the 24.9-km Line 5 will connect Thane, Bhiwandi, and Kalyan via 17 stations, with most of it elevated except for a 3-km underground segment in Bhiwandi. The corridor is set to significantly boost regional connectivity within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
