Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in the Jhumoir Binandini 2025, a grand cultural event in Guwahati, Assam, featuring 8,000 performers showcasing the traditional Jhumoir dance of Assam’s Tea Tribe and Adivasi communities. Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister praised the vibrant atmosphere and the impressive efforts of the artists, highlighting the cultural beauty and heritage of Assam’s tea gardens.

Recalling his 2023 visit to Assam when a record-breaking 11,000 artists performed the Bihu dance, Modi expressed his anticipation for a similarly memorable performance at this event. He congratulated the Assam government and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for organising this celebration, emphasising the participation of the tea community and tribal people as a moment of pride for the state.

The Prime Minister also reflected on Assam’s growing prominence in India’s cultural landscape, mentioning his personal connection with the region and his efforts to promote its heritage globally. He noted his stay in Kaziranga and the recent recognition of the Assamese language as a classical language and the inclusion of Charaideo Moidam in the UNESCO World Heritage list.

Honoring Assam’s historical figures, Modi highlighted the legacy of Lachit Borphukan and the government’s initiatives to commemorate his contributions, including a 125-foot bronze statue and the celebration of his 400th birth anniversary. He also spoke about the establishment of tribal museums across the country to preserve the cultural heritage of indigenous communities.

Focusing on development, the Prime Minister outlined the government’s efforts to uplift the Tea Tribe community. Initiatives include bonuses for Assam Tea Corporation workers, financial support of Rs 15,000 for pregnant women in tea gardens, over 350 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs for healthcare, and more than 100 model schools for tea garden children, with plans for 100 more. He also highlighted the 3% OBC reservation for Tea Tribe youth and a Rs 25,000 self-employment assistance scheme.

The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, Union Ministers Dr S Jaishankar and Sarbananda Sonowal, Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, and Union Minister of State Pabitra Margherita.

Jhumoir Binandini 2025 marks 200 years of Assam’s tea industry and industrialization, celebrating the state’s cultural diversity and unity through the traditional Jhumoir dance.
