The project aims to enhance the city’s transportation network and ease congestion. The proposed tunnel will follow the twin tunnel method, employing advanced technology to ensure efficiency and sustainability. At a high-level meeting held at Sahyadri Guest House, the Chief Minister emphasized the need for swift action and directed authorities to submit the project proposal immediately. Major infra investments approved In the same meeting, significant allocations were made for infrastructure development in Pune and its surrounding regions. The state government has decided to provide government-owned land free of cost to the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA). This decision aims to fast-track key urban projects and improve connectivity across the city. Additionally, approvals for essential structural planning have been granted, ensuring that the city’s development remains well-organised and future-ready. To enhance connectivity, Chief Minister Fadnavis instructed authorities to ensure seamless access between Purandar Airport and key highways, including the Pune bypass, Pune-Satara Road, and PuneNagar Road. Future-proofing urban development As part of Pune’s long-term urban planning strategy, authorities have been directed to ensure that all new roads are at least 18 metres wide to accommodate future population growth. Additionally, fundamental infrastructure such as water supply, sewage systems, electricity, crematoriums, and burial grounds should be prioritized in the first phase of development, while other amenities will be included in the second phase. The CM further directed PMRDA to fasttrack water supply projects and launch an upgraded website offering comprehensive online services for residents. He also emphasized the need to keep development charges affordable to ease the financial burden on citizens. Public transport enhancements & sustainable growth Public transportation was another key focus of the meeting. The Chief Minister advised PMRDA to carefully assess the workforce, maintenance capabilities, and population needs before deploying additional buses for Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML). Earlier, PMPML introduced electric buses, providing air-conditioned, cost-effective travel for Pune’s residents. Recognizing the growing demand for public transport, PMPML has requested 500 new buses, which will run on CNG to promote environmentally friendly commuting. The government has assured that all necessary measures will be taken to prevent future management challenges in the transport sector. Metro expansion and road network upgrades To further boost connectivity in Pune, authorities have been tasked with expediting the allocation of land within the Pune Raj Bhavan premises for metro flyover services. Furthermore, road network regulations will be modified to ensure that all new roads in upcoming development plans maintain the required 18-meter width.
