Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana (Gramin) Will Transform Rural Housing

The Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana – Gramin (PMAY-G), launched in April 2016, is spearheading affordable, dignified housing for rural India. The initiative aims to construct 295 million houses with essential amenities, with an additional 200 millionhomes sanctioned for 2024-29.

Progress So Far: 379 million homes allocated, 356 million sanctioned, and 272 million completed (as of March 2025). 60% of homes reserved for SC/ST communities, with 5% allocated to Persons with Disabilities.

Transparency & Monitoring: Geo-tagging & real-time updates track every construction phase. Multi-level inspections by government officials and Self-Help Groups (SHGs) ensure quality control. Direct Benefit Transfers (DBT) prevent leakages, ensuring secure fund disbursal.

Impact on Rural Communities: Faster completion: Construction time reduced from 314 days to 114 days (2017-18). Job creation: Boost in demand for construction materials and skilled labour. Better living standards: Increased spending on food, LPG usage, and sanitation. Health benefits: Reduced open defecation due to in-house toilets.
