The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) snapped the power supply to six government offices due to non-payment of bills.

MSEDCL snapped power su[[ly to the Government Photo Registry department.The power supply was cut due to non-payment of bills, which affected work at three property registration offices, two joint sub-registrar offices and the photo registry office.

The Manager of the Government Photo Registry department, Deepak Patil, told the media that the outstanding amount was Rs 6.94 lakh from six offices.

According to the officials, MSEDCL has been carrying out the drive across the city after giving due warnings to the government offices for the monthly payment of electricity bills.

Another official of MSEDCL said that the drive was being carried out only against offices defaulting on payment. Token disconnection is carried out for government offices for a few hours, affecting the government and citizens. Based on a commitment to payment of bills, the department restores the power supply.

Shravan Hardikar, State Inspector General of Registration and Stamps, said that the senior officers are requesting MSEDCL to restore the power supply soon. The office was committed to completing the payments soon.

Shrikant Joshi, a consumer rights activist, told the media that such government offices should pay electricity bills on time with good battery backup to avoid inconveniences to the citizens.

He said that the consumers pay enormous amounts as stamp duty, and the least these public offices can provide facilities to the people. Technical glitches are also frequent at the property registration offices, resulting from server failure or power cuts. He added that in the backdrop of World Consumer Day, the state should adopt and declare a consumer-friendly policy, and the government should be accountable for the bad governance policy.
