Housing project under PMAY to launch in Vadodara after five years

A housing project funded by the Pradhan Mantri Aawas Yojana in Tandalja will finally get underway more than five years after the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) destroyed 1,428 homes and 78 stores in Sahakarnagar.

In Sahakarnagar, the civic authority demolished homes and businesses in July 2017 despite plans to build residences for the poor on the same plot of land. The project was to be built on a 44,304 sq m plot of land through a public-private collaboration.

Later, it was discovered that the property contained a 4,200 sq m pond. Environmentalists asked the Supreme Court and the Gujarat High Court to protect the pond. Along with the pond's area, a nine-meter buffer zone around the pond was also required. 7,104 sq m were the entire area after the margin.
