Housing Minister Announces Survey of Homeless People in Ladakh

Union Housing Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, during his three-day visit to Ladakh, announced plans to conduct a comprehensive survey to identify homeless individuals in the region. The goal is to ensure that no one remains homeless and that all eligible individuals can benefit from the PM Awas Yojana (PMAY), a government scheme that aims to provide affordable housing to the underprivileged. This initiative aligns with the government’s broader effort to improve living conditions across the Union Territory.

Khattar, who also oversees the Power and Urban Affairs Ministries, highlighted Ladakh’s vast potential for solar energy development. The region is currently in the process of setting up a 13 GW solar plant that will meet local energy demands while also contributing to the national grid. This project is part of the government’s plan to make Ladakh a hub for renewable energy generation.

In addition to addressing housing, Khattar emphasized waste management and worker safety. He reviewed ongoing projects and assured that the government would continue to support efforts to enhance sanitation and waste processing in the region. He also assured that manpower shortages in the power department would be addressed, and steps would be taken to improve worker safety conditions, particularly for sanitation workers. Moreover, he confirmed that efforts to expedite water supply and sewage treatment plant projects in Leh and Kargil would be prioritized to improve the region’s infrastructure.
