Demolition of unauthorised bungalows begins in Thane

The Thane municipal corporation initiated the demolition of seven opulent bungalows in Yeoor following an internal investigation that uncovered their construction without proper civic approval. These structures, located within the 'eco-sensitive zone' of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, were built during the pandemic.

Thane-based activist Yogesh Mundhra, who raised concerns about the construction's impact on the wildlife movement, had brought the matter before the Upa-LokAyukta in 2021. The municipal commissioner was subsequently tasked with investigating the issue, leading to the revelation that the cottages and bungalows, each measuring nearly 500 square feet, were erected without any official permission. Currently, three structures have already begun the demolition process, with the remaining set to follow suit in the coming days, as confirmed by a municipal official.
